DIY Hair Masks

No matter the weather, our hair is always exposed to it. From the drying sun to the biting cold. It’s always affecting our hair. So, what can we do? The answer is a hair mask.

A hair mask is the nurturing your hair needs to get back to a vibrant and healthy state. The hair mask temporarily surrounds your hair strands and can soothe your poor scalp, helping to revitalise it.

You can buy individual packets or a hair mask in a tub. If you’re ever home on a weekend and come to the realisation your hair is looking a liiiiittle flat and lifeless, but you cannot pop down to your local store, don’t fret. You can make a hair mask from the ingredients in your kitchen, just like you can a face mask.

A few ingredients you should stock your kitchen with, in case this needs arises are:

Coconut Oil | very nourishing for your hair

Apple Cider Vinegar | has nutrients that help to make your hair stronger and overall healthier and also helps to eliminate itchy dandruff.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil | natural conditioner for dry hair

Honey | has nutrients and is an emollient (meaning it is great for hydrating your hair)

Egg Yolk | a superfood for your hair, moisturises and has vitamins a, e, folate and biotin that aid in hair growth and healthy hair

How to combine these ingredients for a hair mask:

For dry, weak hair I suggest these combinations:

Egg yolk + apple cider vinegar

Extra virgin olive oil + egg yolks

Coconut oil + apple cider vinegar

Honey + apple cider vinegar

Extra hydrating mask:

honey + coconut oil

Bonus ingredients: Argan Oil and Avocados

If you have argan oil at hand, this is great! Argan oil is all the rage in shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments. Beat the stores price tag by having your own personal supply. If you have extremely dry hair I recommend you cut up and mash an avocado, add 1 tbsp of Argan oil. This mask will be packed of good fatty oils that are hydrating and add a shine to your hair.

I recommend you do a hair mask once every 1 or 2 weeks depending on your hairs condition. All my ingredient combinations are only a suggestion – feel free to mix and match according to what you think will work best for your hair and scalp.
