A Guide to Exfoliation

Exfoliating should be a key step in your skincare routine. Learn why and try these two natural homemade scrubs you can treat your skin to.

Why do we exfoliate?

The aim behind exfoliating is not to get your skin to turn red, for it to dry out and peel. It is to scrub the dead skin cells off and exfoliating stimulates your skin giving you a brighter complexion. Also, exfoliation should count as a step to prepping your skin for makeup as it allows you to have a smoother make-up application and just makes it look better.

How to exfoliate?

In the most simplest terms, you rub it on your face in circular motions and then wash it off.

How many times should you exfoliate?

You should exfoliate 2/3 times a week. If you have sensitive skin, you should only exfoliate once a week. Do not exfoliate your face more than 3 times a week as over-exfoliating can lead to inflammation of the skin.

Face scrubs you can make

As there are so many different types of bottled exfoliating scrubs, I suggest you make a natural, homemade scrub because this way you know every single ingredient you are putting on your face.

Silky smooth, sugar scrub

Ingredients: Granulated sugar | coconut oil

The sugar will add the friction to slough off dead skin cells, the coconut oil will hydrate.

If your skin suffers from breakouts or is acne prone, then try this alternative sugar scrub.

Ingredients: brown sugar | honey | a few drops of olive oil

The sugar will act as the exfoliant. The honey is added because of its antibacterial properties, helping to stop further breakouts or irritation of any present spots. The few drops of olive oil add a hydrating aspect and it's also packed with anti-aging antioxidants.
